NOx sensors are able to detect the presence of nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide in exhaust streams, and are used mainly in diesel engine vehicles. Mitigation of NOx is critical since NOx is a respiratory hazard, a greenhouse gas, and a contributor to smog and acid rain. An effective NOx sensor, therefore, can greatly improve air quality for people and the environment.
Our testing setup is able to simulate high temperatures and gas flows that will be experienced in actual driving conditions. Impedance spectroscopy is used to determine how sensitive the NOx sensor is to gas species of interest.
Areas of research interest include testing different sensor materials, optimizing operating conditions, and controlling the sintered microstructure
